Although almost half of the State of Colorado’s geographical make up is flat, in blatant contrast to the rugged Rocky Mountain region of the United States where it resides, Colorado is made up of more than 500 mountain tops that stretch up to more than 4,000 meters in height – making it the only state in the United States that goes beyond 1,000 meters in elevation. Out of the 500 towering peaks, 51 of which are called “fourteeners”, that is, those of its kind that elevate up to 14,000 meters and even more.

If you are in Colorado in April, September or October, you can look into buying a season pass for Keystone, Breckenridge, and A-Basin. Both Loveland and Copper Mountain sometimes sell season passes into November. If you plan on skiing 5 or more days, a season pass to one of the areas ski resorts will more than pay for itself and is the cheapest way to go…even though you won’t get to use it for the entire season.

To say that the Vail Resort is one of the best in North America is an understatement. In fact, the resort has won the honor an unheard of 14 years out of the last 19. This is probably because Vail is what skiing is all about. Vail has over 5,000 acres of skiable terrain and is located just 100 miles outside of Denver. The Vail Resort is one that is full each and every year and is a must see for any ski enthusiast.

Once you’ve found a place to stay on your Vail ski adventure, the next thing to do is to have a great time. Whether snow boarding or skiing is your main activity, there are plenty of slopes to choose from. Easy and gentle slopes are great for beginners to try out or even the more advanced who just want to take it a little bit easy. Of course, there are also the more challenging black diamond slopes for the more daring or experienced to attempt. After all the Rocky Mountains are home to several Olympic training areas, so there are bound to be at least a few challenging runs to check out. A Vail ski trip can be both challenging and relaxing.Your next thought should where do we want to stay on our trip to the Rockies. Do you stay at the resort with some ski in and out lodging or do we stay in Old Towne and take the shuttle up one stop. Maybe two miles down the road in the Town of Winter Park or even farther down the road in Fraser is the ticket. Options for all with price ranges that run the whole gamut. General rules of thumb are the farther from the resort the cheaper the lodging. Farther from the resort also more complications getting to ski area. The benefits of staying in town is there are many restaurants. Out of all the destinations one can choose for Colorado ski vacations, perhaps the most well-known is the Aspen Snowmass resort, set in Aspen, Colorado and encompassing nearby Snowmass Mountain and the newly developed Snowmass Village. Aspen is considered to be a haven for world-class skiers and also a mecca for those who enjoy wealth and fame.

n the northwest part of Colorado the mountain is comprised of six peaks, 165 trails spread out over 2,965 acres served by 20 lifts, including four high-speed quad chairlifts and an 8-passenger gondola, rising 3,668 vertical feet. Gladed areas of Sunshine and Storm Peaks are Steamboat’s claim to fame, with Champagne Powder snow in the trees for the most avid powder hounds. If the snow is falling there is not a better place in the world to ski. A great town with working cattle ranches and an old west feel make this a can’t miss destination.

Skiing is certainly not all that Colorado has to offer. If you are a non skier in the party then you will certainly not be stuck for things to do and see. There is everything from monuments and museums to theatres and amusement parks… and do not forget the spas and hot springs. There is also some wonderful shopping if you wanted to indulge in some retail therapy while the others were out on the slopes. To list Colorado ski resorts and tell you about the facilities and sights that you could enjoy would take a long, long time.
